Asteroid City is the New Mullholland Drive

This was a cinematically gorgeous film, there’s nothing like Wes Anderson style. The message is reminiscent of Mulholland Drive in my opinion, that the movie is meant to be confusing and not have a clear cut meaning. The meta film-inside-a-film gives structure to the plot, just as fantasy gives structure to reality, tying it all together with the ‘cast’ chanting “you cannot wake up if you don’t fall asleep”.
The character who’s character plays Augie (confusing, yes), who I would consider the main character, asks if he’s doing it right— that he still doesn’t understand the meaning of the play. This furthers the Mullholland Drive- esque narrative of the film because the characters, too, are confused and yet the character who plays the director tells him he doesn’t need to understand, just to keep going how he thinks is right. We never know the meaning of life we just need to keep doing what works for us! Honestly, I could go on about my interpretation of different things but my overall thoughts are that this is a more obvious version of Mullholand Drive and with a much more fun, light hearted, and quirky styling. Loved it!
Lots of awesome, hard hitting lines in this film and truly enjoyable and funny characters. My personal favorite is Woodrow! It had me entertained the whole time but the viewing experience was ever so slightly dulled by the fact that I had been standing in heels for hours prior, my butt really hurt from the seat, and the man next to me smelled horrendous. AND I was super super hungry. If none of these factors had occurred the experience would’ve been a 103891/10 but I still give it 10/10 because I got to go to the premiere and that was the coolest thing I think I’ve ever done.
